Chapter 10

Zac should have killed Kallen Zaphin when he had the chance.

As it was, the new Tesnin of the Antaere race—the leader of the royal family—was the biggest thorn in the Human’s effort to expand into the Outer Reaches. After Zac and his team helped destroy the Ha’curn fleet heading to Earth, the royal family—along with most of the other high-ranking Antaere—saw the writing on the wall and fled Antara, disappearing into the OR. For centuries, they’d been making forays into the area, so they were already well-known among the more advanced civilizations. That made it easy for them to warn the natives of the impending invaders, power-hungry savages with their cadre of super-soldiers. No one was safe, no compromise could be given. The Humans would ravage your worlds and eat your babies. The only salvation was to fight.

Governor Lampert and Negotiator Dee Dixon tried their best to get through to the Nazdin, but to no avail. The race had an advanced space program before the Antaere contacted them at the end of the war. But it was all sub-light and confined to their native star system. Then the Zaphins gave the Nazdin gravity-drive technology. It was a start, requiring a massive effort by the natives to convert most of their spacecraft to FTL before the invaders arrived. What the Nazdin had with regards to a war fleet was meager compared to the Humans. But it still caused a problem.

Earth decided that the 7-rated civilization was worth pursuing as a new member of the UAS, setting in motion a process that was becoming routine. Diplomatic efforts were made and promptly rejected. This activated Zac’s forces, with a battle plan designed not to beat the natives into submission, but more to convince them of the futility of their resistance. Membership was going to happen one way or the other. Better to preserve most of one’s civilization than have it destroyed in a fight to the death.

The planet’s main city of San Mosin was targeted. Imagine New York City being isolated from the rest of Earth and occupied by super aliens. That was what Zac’s REVs were tasked with doing. To make the effort easier, the diplomats told the natives what they intended to do, allowing millions to leave the city before hostilities began. It also gave the resistance time to set boobytraps and organize terror cells. Even so, by the time the invasion launched, most of the city was deserted.

The campaign began with an air assault by 308s. They strafed highways leading into the city, cutting off access while leaving expensive bridges intact. The purpose was to build a moat of destruction around San Mosin, further cutting it off from the native population. The Nazdin air force was quite advanced, and they put up a valiant fight. But 308s are the most-advanced fighter craft in this part of the galaxy. It wasn’t much of a battle.

Then Zac’s troops landed, brought down by ninety landing craft in the initial sortie.

San Mosin had once been a city of twenty million, and the natives weren’t about to concede it without a fight.
